Cecilia Rose Kernen

EASTPOINTE- Cecilia Rose Kernen (Torzewski), age 93, passed away on June 21, 2026, a feisty and loved resident of Bridgeway Park Assisted Living Facility in Battle Creek, MI. She was born March 20, 1933 in Detroit, a daughter of the late Stephen and Rose Torzewski. Cecilia graduated from Croswell High School and belonged to St Patrick Catholic Parish. She attended St. Francis Nursing School in Hamtramck, MI. She was the class president, honors graduate, and a cherished friend to her fellow classmates for her entire life. She worked as a Registered Nurse at St Francis Hospital, then earned her Bachelor's Degree in Nursing, and went on to work at Holy Cross Hospital in Detroit for many years. She officially retired from nursing in 1998. But once a nurse, always a nurse! She had to find more people to care for and love. She dedicated herself to the community of St. Barnabas Catholic Church in Eastpointe, MI for the next twenty years, and was a trusted friend to everyone. She retired from there in 2018. She was the devoted matriarch of her family, and raised "the Kernen six bonded by love, faith, and spirit" in St Florian parish, in Hamtramck, MI. She is survived by her children, Mary and Ed, Mike, Lauri and Dave, and Ken and Rita; eleven beautiful grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren; her sister, Clara Dickensheets of Croswell, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her two beloved sons, Mark and Gary; her sister, Tess Junga, and her brothers, Stephen, Stanley, and Vincent Torzewski. These are things we will always remember about Ceil, our beautiful mother; family parties for every occasion, Christmas Eve and Santa Claus, birthday cards, annual vacations to visit grandma and camping, a welcoming home, a soft shoulder to lean on, the voice of reason, lots of singing and laughter, and her unfailing love and support for all of us. She loved to sing with her sisters and was blessed with a beautiful soprano "voice of an angel." She also loved to play games and win! She definitely passed on her competitive spirit to all her kids and grandkids. She earned the respect of everyone by loving and caring for them. She taught us all the importance of faith, family, and friends. Visitation will be held at the Pomeroy Funeral Home in Lexington, MI on Thursday, June 25 from 5 - 8 P.M. Rosary devotions will be held at 7 P.M. Thursday evening at the funeral home. Funeral Mass will be held at 11 A.M. on Friday at the Ave Maria Parish- St. Denis Catholic Church in Lexington, with visiting at the church from 10 - 11 A.M. Friday morning. Fr. Bala Madanu will officiate. Interment will follow in the Mt. Hope Catholic Cemetery in Croswell.
