Daniel "Dan" R. Coburn

CROSWELL- Daniel R. “Dan” Coburn, age 83, of Croswell, passed away on September 3, 2026, at the Sanilac Medical Care Facility. Dan was born on January 30, 1943, to the late Howard and Marie (Brown) Coburn. His fondest childhood memories were built on the family farm alongside his siblings. On October 10, 1964, he married the love of his life, Doris Ostic, beginning a 61-year marriage. Dan spent most of his life in Applegate, the community where he spent his best years and loved deeply. He gave back to his town as a Village of Applegate Trustee for 8 years and as a dedicated member of the Lions Club. Among his favorite local traditions was playing euchre with "the good ole boys" at the party store, where he made countless lifelong friends and shared morning coffee for years. Before moving to the care facility, he made his home in Croswell. Following 13 years with Duncan Builders, Dan dedicated 22 years to the Cros-Lex School District before his retirement. There he started by driving the delivery route between school buildings, later moving into his role as the middle school janitorial and maintenance custodian. Popularly known to everyone as "Dan the Man", he enjoyed joking with students and staff, brightening the hallways wherever he went. Outside of work, Dan was happiest spending time in his shop, tending to his garden and his chickens, watching Westerns, or heading out turkey and rabbit hunting with friends. He loved taking long drives with Doris, listening to Elvis, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, and classic country. Above all else, Dan loved his family. What his family will miss most is his humor—he loved more than anything to make people laugh and always had a joke or trick up his sleeve. Dan is survived by his beloved wife, Doris; his children: Tammy Holt of Sandusky, Kristine (Tina) Anderson of Applegate, Daniel H. (Angela) Coburn of Deckerville, and Jeremy (Jenn) Coburn of Pennsylvania; as well as many cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers: Frank, Mike, and Jim (Cecilia) Coburn; his sisters: Thelma (Clyde) Holt, Hazel Davault, and Doris (Ralph) Nowicki; and his sister-in-law, Marge Coburn. He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Marie Coburn; his son-in-law, Charles Anderson Sr.; his brothers: David A. Coburn, David R. Coburn, and Tom Coburn; and his sister, Emily Coburn. To honor Dan's wishes, his family will hold a private gathering to celebrate his life.
