Dennis Leo Schommer

It is with profound sadness that the family of Dennis Leo Schommer announce his passing on Saturday, January 13, 2024 at the age of 84 years. He was born on May 14, 1939 in Port Sanilac, a son of the late Leo and Evelyn (Matthews) Schommer. Dennis married Patricia Fortushniak on November 25, 1961 at St. Marys Catholic Church in Port Sanilac. Dennis was a devoted husband and father whose Catholic faith played a significant role in shaping his life and those close to him. Shortly before his passing, he said, “The things you value most in life are the relationships you create.” This was most evident when over 200 friends and family attended his historic art show this past July at the township hall in his hometown of Port Sanilac. The family would like to thank those who visited with Dennis and were able to celebrate his life and artistic accomplishments before his passing. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 62 years, Patricia Schommer of Port Sanilac, his four children, Kelly Schommer of Lexington, Teresa (Bill) James of Chicago, Michael (Tarah) Schommer of Grant Township and Matthew Schommer of Burtchville; ten grandchildren, Jonathon (Rianne) Sherman, Mary Sherman, Veronica Schommer, Max Schommer, Gemma James, Leo Schommer, Genevieve Schommer, Augustine Schommer, Benedict Schommer and Ambrose Schommer; one great grandson, Theo Sherman; his three brothers and sister, Gerald (Barbara) Schommer of Port Sanilac, Lawrence (Cynthia) Schommer of AZ, Rodney (Mary) Schommer of Carsonville and Beth (Dell) Hardison of Port Sanilac. Several nieces and nephews and many friends. Dennis was preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law, Mary Lou and George Prusick. Visitation will be from 9 A.M. -11 A.M. on Tuesday at the Ave Maria Parish- St. Marys Catholic Church in Port Sanilac. Funeral Mass will be held at 11 A.M.. on Tuesday at St. marys Catholic Church. Fr. Donald J. Eppenbrock will officiate. A luncheon will be held immediately after the mass in the St. Marys Center. Inurnment will take place in the near future in the Old St. Marys Cemetery in Port Sanilac. Our Father who art in Heaven, Hallowed be thy name; Thy Kingdom come Thy will be done On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses As we forgive those who trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation But deliver us from evil.
