Gary John McBurney

LEXINGTON- Gary John McBurney, a beloved son and father, passed away on April 5, 2026 at the age of 73. Born on December 20, 1952, Gary lived a life of quiet service, deep faith and an enduring love for people and places he called his own. For more than two decades, Gary dedicated himself as a volunteer medical transport driver, ensuring that some of his community’s most vulnerable neighbors could get where they needed to go, a man who believed that serving others was a privilege. His faithfulness in that role reflected something even deeper, a life rooted in trust in Jesus Christ, a faith that was not loud or performative, but steady and sure, the kind that held him through every season of life. Gary had a mind that amazed the people around him. Whether it was Detroit sports stats, weather patterns, lake temperatures, or Scripture verses, he had a gift for remembering things others easily forgot. He was most at home on the shores of Lexington Beach, where he spent the better part of his life. The water had a way of centering him, and those who knew Gary often picture him there, unhurried, content, exactly where he belonged. He loved his Detroit sports teams with the loyalty only a true fan knows, riding the highs and weathering the lows with equal devotion. Gary is survived by his two children, Justin (Brooklyn) McBurney of Port Huron and Renee Gaiski of Hastings; 9 grandchildren, Ezra and Eden McBurney, Nickolas, Alexis, Jonavon, Issac, Noah, Abigayle and Gabriel Gaiski; his sister, Kathy Stewart of Belmont; his former wife and good friend Leona McBurney of Port Huron; Several nieces and nephews. Gary was preceded in death by his parents John and Mildred McBurney; his sister and brother-in-law, Joan and Lawrence Woodcox. Cremation has taken place and there will be a private graveside service held in the spring when his ashes are interred on the family plot in the Lexington Municipal Cemetery in Lexington. Gary McBurney will be deeply missed by his family and by all who were fortunate enough to know him. He leaves behind a legacy anchored not in temporary things of this world, but in the One he trusted above all else, Jesus Christ, his Lord and Savior, in whom he lives now and forever.
