June 13, 1920 - October 26, 2018
LEXINGTON- On Friday, October 26, 2018, Irene Freeborough passed away peacefully at home at age 98. Irene Margaret Jadron was born on June 13, 1920 in Detroit to Rose and John Jadron. She married William (Bud) Freeborough on August 28, 1948, and they had five children. Irene had a very active work life, first at Packard Automotive Plant, then getting her nursing degree from Sinai Hospital, and being the staff nurse and activities director for a nursing home for many years. She cared well for her elderly charges, and took them on field trips, even down in a salt mine. She served as president of the Womens Athletic Assocation and was greatly involved in building St. Eugene’s parish and school in Detroit. Her social life was even more dynamic, including pinochle groups, dancing, arts and crafts at her church, hosting luaus, bowling, golfing and travelling. She loved a good joke, had a very quick wit and was always very well-dressed, despite her age, she never “went gray”, and even wore lipstick to the beach. She loved music, puzzles, old movies, playing Rummikub and gardening, she was an avid swimmer her entire life, and was often in and out of Lake Huron from Spring until long after Labor Day, and loved swimming to the “smiley face” and back. She willingly gave to many charities, and her pecan tarts were legendary. Irene’s family has had a cottage in Lexington for 86 years, with three cottages next door to each other at one point for the various family units. She and Bud made it their permanent home in 1990, and were very active in the community, including St. Denis Catholic Church, bowling leagues and the K of C. She had a column in the Jeffersonian for many years. Irene was preceded in death by her husband William and her son Bill. Her spirit is carried on by her children Judy (Kris), Jim (Sherrill), Nancy (Swiat), Mary (Bob), six grandchildren and six great grandchildren. She will also be missed by her cat Jazzy, an adoption from the Sanilac County Humane Society who has been her faithful companion. In lieu of lowers donations can be made to the SCHS-Sanilac County Humane Society. Visitation will be from 2-9 P.M. on Sunday at the Pomeroy Funeral Home in Lexington. Rosary Devotions will be held at 4 P.M. on Sunday afternoon at the funeral home. Funeral Mass will be held at 11 A.M. on Monday at the St. Denis Catholic Church in Lexington, with visiting at the church from 10-11 A.M. on Monday. Fr. Donald J. Eppenbrock will officiate. Interment will follow in the St. Denis Cemetery.
