Joseph M. O'Mara

Port Sanilac Michigan Joseph (Joe) Martin O’Mara passed away Thursday, August 20, 2015 Joe was born on July 5th, 1926 and raised in Carsonville, Michigan the son of Edward and Isabel O'Mara. Growing up Joe worked with his brothers and sisters on the family dairy farm. He graduated from Carsonville High School in June of 1941. Upon graduation he joined others of the greatest generation and served his country as a Seaman, First Class in the United States Navy during World War II. Joe attended the University of Detroit post military service and graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Philosophy. He met his wife Patricia O’Neill in 1951 and were married in 1953 at Precious Blood Catholic Church in Detroit. Joe initially worked at the Atomic Power Associates Development from 1952 - 1957, and then move from APAD to Detroit Edison where he finished his career in 1993. He then started his own business Quality Contractors. Joe had many interests including gardening, history, hunting, collecting and restoring antiques. Joe was mostly interested in sports and followed the Lions, Tigers and Red Wings closely. This passion for Detroit sports was a close second to his personal interest in his children and grandchildren’s athletic and personal pursuits. Joe coached and watched hundreds of his family activities. It seemed he never missed a school or sporting event. Joe was loved and cherished by all who knew him. His unforgettable personality, kindness and charm will be truly missed. He was always there for anyone in need, he was generous and cared for those he loved over his own interest. Joe was loved and will be missed by many. He joins his late wife Patricia Ann O’Mara who preceded him in passing on October 30, 2001. Joe leaves behind his 12 children; Dan (Dianne), Grace, Ed (Lanette), Joe Jr. (Sarah), Tom, Matt (Ann), Kelly Larochelle (Dennis), Marty, Shawn (Chris), Michelle Nelson (Scott), Katie Camp (Terry), and Anna Fox. In addition, Joe leaves behind 24 grandchildren and a great grandchild. Visitation will be from 6-9 P.M. on Saturday evening and from 12 Noon until 7 P.M. on Sunday at the Pomeroy Funeral Home in Carsonville. Funeral Mass will be held at 11 A.M. on Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Port Sanilac. With visitation at the church from 10-11 A.M., Fr. Donald J. Eppenbrock will officiate. Interment wil follow in the Old St. Mary's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Foundation for Angelman’s Syndrome Therapeutics or the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
