Nancy Joan Powell

LEXINGTON- Nancy Joan Powell passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 8th at the age of 84. She was surrounded by her family in her home of 30 years in Lexington, MI. Born in Detroit on February 13th, 1937 into the loving home of Harold and Adeline Bell (Gauss). Nancy is a graduate of the arts program at Cass Technical High School and throughout her life brought an artistic, creative detail to most everything she touched. Nancy is survived by children Jennifer Powell, David Jordan (Katie) and Richard Jordan (Jeanette) and her five grandchildren Elizabeth, Jack, Kendall, Mary and William. Also surviving her are her siblings, Doris Bell, Richard Bell (Karen) and Linda Pruss (Bell). She is a beloved aunt to three nieces and two nephews and great aunt to nine great nieces and nephews. Nancy was predeceased by her husband James Howard Powell, her parents, her sister Janet Wilson and her nephew Robert Wilson. During the late 1970’s and throughout the 1980’s Nancy was an active parent in her children’s schools and scouting activities. Nancy served on the L’Anse Creuse Public Schools Board of Education and was instrumental in developing and managing the district’s latchkey program. Over the last 30 years, most people know Nancy as the gracious host and proprietor of The Powell House Bed & Breakfast in Lexington, MI. She was known as a terrific cook and built a steady clientele. Likewise, Nancy shared her passion for gardening with the community and was a founding and honorary member of the Lakeshore Garden Club. She was also proud to help preserve and improve the region as a member of the Lexington Township Planning Commission. Nancy was a friend to any animal that graced her yard or doorstep. Cats were closest to her heart and there was never a time when a cat or two were not part of the household. Her latest rescue Beaner, will continue to receive the same love and attention he has become accustomed to. Nancy left an incredible mark on her beloved family and friends and will be dearly missed. She knew and loved The Lord and He has brought her to His Eternal home. A celebration of Nancy’s life will be conducted later this summer.
